Fraxel Laser Skin Treatment for All Skin Types

Fraxel on Oprah's 10 Year Younger Show (Contains Auto Audio)

Kathie Lee Gifford Raves about her Fraxel Treatment Live on NBC's The Today Show

The revolutionary FRAXEL II Laser Treatment produces thousands of tiny but deep columns of treatment in your skin, known as Microthermal Treatment Zones. This treatment eliminates old epidermal pigmented cells (also known as sun spots and age spots). It also penetrates deeply into the dermis. Just as important are the areas of skin the FRAXEL laser leaves untouched. For every Microthermal Zone the laser targets and treats intensively, it leaves the surrounding tissue unaffected and intact. This fractional treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area was treated at once, using the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections, including wrinkles, scars and pigments.

This state-of-the-art advanced procedure is a "Total Body Laser." We can treat a variety of conditions all over the body:

  • Pigmentation: freckles, age spots, sun damage and Melasma
  • Texture: wrinkles, enlarged pores, rough skin, actinic keratoses
  • Scars: acne scars, surgical scars
  • Tightens: builds collagen to reduce "weathered appearance"

Is it FDA-approved?

The Reliant Fraxel SR Laser has received FDA 510(k) clearances for acne scars and surgical scars; skin resurfacing procedures; the photocoagulation of pigmented lesions, such as lentigos (age spots), solar lentigos (sun spots) and dyschromia; melasma; treatment of periorbital wrinkles; and for dermatological conditions requiring the coagulation of soft tissue.

Clinical studies suggest that an effective treatment regimen is 3 to 5 sessions usually spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. However, treatment plans can be very flexible and effective, even spaced by weeks if that best meets the needs of our patients. By design, each treatment session targets about 20 to 25% of the skin’s surface, depending on the treatment level selected. Results are immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months.

The FRAXEL treatment can be performed right in our office using topical anesthetics and blocks. The treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed prior to the procedure.

FAQs

What happens after treatment?

The patient will experience a mild sunburn sensation for about 1 to 2 hours which dissipates to virtually no discomfort. The skin will have a pinkish tone for 5 to 7 days. This is a normal sign that skin is healing deeply. Swelling is mild and generally resolves in 2 to 3 days. The skin will also be tight and have a sandpaper like feel. The skin usually flakes off around day 2 or 3 and lasts for another day or so. New epidermal skin develops immediately, within 24 hours.

What are the benefits of Fraxel Laser treatments?

This treatment eliminates old epidermal pigmented cells. It also penetrates deeply into the dermis. This will reduce pigmentation, freckles, melasma, age spots, wrinkles, acne scars, rough skin and weathered appearance in face, neck, chest, arms, hands and any part of the body. It is also safe on all skin types.

How many treatments will I need?

The greatest benefit is achieved with 4 to 5 treatments. However, the doctor or our specially trained cosmetic nurses will be able to determine how many treatments you need. Patients willing to undergo a short amount of downtime may prefer our TotalFX laser procedure which is a combination of our ActiveFX and DeepFX.

When can I go back to work?

Typically patients find they can go back to work soon after treatment or the next day.

Can I wear make-up or shave right away?

You may apply make-up or shave soon after the treatment.

What can I do to protect my new skin?

Absolutely be sure to wear SPF 30-plus sunscreen and apply it twice a day. You must completely avoid the sun and take extra care to protect your skin from more damage. Talk to one of our staff members about our medical-grade sun block and post-laser skin treatments.

Related and Alternative Treatments for Hyperpigmentation, Scars and Rough Skin

  • Fotofacial, a light based treatment to reduce sun-induced pigmentation, redness and splotchiness. Fotofacial uses flashes of light and does not affect the skin’s surface during treatment.
  • ActiveFX or Deep FX for more intense single-treatment for laser resurfacing and skin tightening.
  • Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) for improving texture of sun damaged skin and removing actinic keratoses. PDT also has dramatic effect on resistant acne.
  • Cosmelan for reduction and control of UV and/or heat-induced hyperpigmentation and facial discoloration. Cosmelan is a topical skin lightening program that begins with an in-office Lightening mask.
  • Medical Grade Chemical Peels or Microdermabrasion may be used for light cases of skin discoloration and brown patches. Dr. Mani or our medical staff will be able to advise you of the treatment selection that will best improve your skin issues.
