Stubborn fat on your physique can be really frustrating, especially if you feel like you’ve exercised and dieted in vain. Sometimes, certain fat cells just don’t seem to shrink no matter what. In such cases, tumescent liposuction can be a great option for removing the fat. Unlike more invasive procedures, the tumescent technique requires only local anesthetic, greatly reducing the recovery period afterward. What Is Tumescent Liposuction?
This liposuction technique requires only local anesthetic, which means:
- Shorter recovery
- Less bleeding
- Less swelling
- Reduced post-operative discomfort
- No general anesthesia side effects
The type of anesthetic used is called “tumescent fluid.” Tumescent, which means “swollen,” refers to what happens to the fat cells in which the fluid is injected.

The experienced physicians at our practice have completed thorough training to learn the surgical technique that provides the best results while maximizing your safety. We are excited to offer this method of liposuction, which provides effective fat removal without requiring an extended recovery period. The most common treatment areas are:
- Male breasts (gynecomastia)
These areas of the physique are prone to excess fat storage. Even if you diet and exercise, you may notice stubborn fat that doesn’t shrink, no matter what you do. Tumescent liposuction is a great way to remove these pesky fat cells.
How It Works
Tumescent fluid is administered to the treatment area via injections. This fluid includes lidocaine and epinephrine. The lidocaine numbs the area while the epinephrine shrinks blood vessels. At the same time, the fluid causes the fat cells in the area to become swollen and firm, which makes it much easier to break apart and remove the fat cells efficiently with an instrument called a cannula. Because the blood vessels have temporarily shrunk, bleeding in the area is minimal.
The lidocaine remains active in your body for about 24 hours, so you will be getting the pain-fighting benefit of the drug even after the procedure has been completed. Once it wears off, an over-the-counter pain reliever should work well for any lingering discomfort.
Because tumescent liposuction is an outpatient surgery, you will be able to return home shortly after your procedure. Although each person’s experience is unique, you should be able to return to work after a few days of rest. Most types of exercise other than walking will need to be avoided for about a week.
Most people notice an immediate result, although the post-op swelling will be hiding your final results. A good deal of swelling will go down over the next few days, with your best results visible after a few months.
One of the most innovative ways to perform modern liposuction, KleinLipo involves injecting a large volume of local anesthetic into fat, minimizing the need for general anesthesia and improving the patient experience.
