Fraxel Pigment Laser (Melasma, Hyperpigmentation)

La Jolla, California

Fraxel recently developed a “pigment erasing” laser with a laser wavelength which specifically forces the quick lifting of excess pigmentation. The wavelength is called Thulium and is the latest procedure for removing and reducing superficial pigment.

Types of Hyperpigmentation Treated by the Fraxel Pigment Laser

  • Superficial Melasma
  • Acne-induced hyperpigmentation
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Sun induced hyperpigmentation
  • Non specific pigmentation

Why a Laser for Hyperpigmentation?

Because most topical products take a considerable amount of time to suppress pigment, many patients want a much quicker resolution to what has usually been a long term problem. The Thulium Fraxel laser gives results in about 7 days.

How does the Fraxel Pigment Laser work?

The skin contains different “targets” for lasers. One target is water, another is hemoglobin (found in broken vessels) and the third is melanin. Melanin is the pigment that causes brown spots and skin discoloration. The Thulium wavelength of the Fraxel laser

  • directly targets the brown pigment in the skin
  • breaks up the pigment
  • forces a fast shedding of the skin containing those cells

What happens after the treatment? First the skin turns darker and pigmented areas will be more pronounced. Then the top layers will peel, much like sunburn peeling, and the more even toned skin beneath will take its place. The peel is gentle, but you’ll be cautioned to avoid the sun as new skin is always more susceptible to sunburn.

Is Fraxel Pigment Laser only for the face?

The new Thulium laser wavelength can be used on many areas of the body. Discoloration is not limited to the face, and many patients have discoloration on the chest, neck and arms that they find displeasing.

Can anyone use the Fraxel Pigment Laser?

Most everyone, but we need to evaluate your skin to determine skin type and also factor in your lifestyle. If you are perpetually in the sun with little to no sun protection, then any pigmentation treatment may be minimally effective or only effective short term. For those with certain darker skin colors, we prescribe a preparatory regimen to make the process as effective as possible.

What should I do after the treatment is complete?

Sun protection is critical. UV rays from sun exposure, even exposure inside from being near windows or in a car, will reignite melanin production. Adhering to a daily program of sunscreen and minimal sun exposure will prolong the effects of any treatment, whether topical (such as Cosmelan or other), light (such as IPL) or laser as with the Fraxel Thulium.
