What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that affects the cells that line the epidermis or outermost layer of skin. As the most common form of skin cancer in the country, basal cell carcinoma is said to be diagnosed in approximately four million cases each year. Basal cell carcinoma typically appears as tumors on the ears, scalp, face, neck, and arms. While basal cell carcinoma typically does not spread or metastasize, it may worsen and cause disfigurement if left untreated.
What Causes Basal Cell Carcinoma?
When our patients think of skin cancer, they typically think of overexposure to UV light and the sun’s harmful rays. The appearance of basal cell carcinoma is no different. Patients who have light skin, light features, burn easily, spend long periods of time in the sun, and/or have a family history of skin cancer are at a higher risk of developing basal cell carcinoma in the future. To learn more about how you can better prevent skin cancer, we encourage you to come in and see Dr. Siddiqui for a one-on-one consultation.
