Chin Augmentation Using Injectables

In La Jolla

By Nasrin Mani, M.D.

Chin implant procedures grew significantly in popularity last year. According to statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, chin augmentation grew by about 71% last year. The size of the increase is partly due to the relative infrequency of the procedure (only about 20,000 procedures were performed last year compared to the 5.7 million BOTOX® Cosmetic injections), but it is a real increase. There have been a number of proposed explanations. One explanation is the so-called “smartphone face,” in which aging in the lower portion of our face is accentuated both in severity and importance by the use of smartphones.

Smartphones can lead to increased sagging in the lower face because when we use our phones we spend a lot of time looking down at them, and the bad posture can contribute to saggy jowls, marionette lines (nasolabial folds), and double chins.

Worse, because many people Skype or use other videophone applications, they may be looking at images of themselves from the angle of their smartphone, which increases the visibility of our chin and neck. People are now seeing their chins as if for the first time and considering what might be done to improve their appearance.

Although chin implants are commonly used for chin augmentation, we can achieve the same effect using less invasive methods. This allows you to evaluate the appearance of an augmented chin before committing to permanent implants. Radiesse is an ideal filler for this. With just a single injection session, taking less than half an hour, you can have a year or more of results. If you like them, they can be extended, or you can consider chin implants, but if you don’t, the Radiesse will be completely absorbed by the body, restoring your natural appearance.
