Stem Cell Treatment for Hair Loss
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is an established medical treatment for hair loss. The addition of stem cells to this treatment is the newest, most advanced technology available to treat hair loss. Human mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord tissue along with the patient’s own platelet rich plasma are injected into the patient’s scalp to work in conjunction to provide optimum follicle support. Patients have reported thickening of existing hair as well as an awakening of dormant hair follicles in the treated areas.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are a unique type of cell in the body. Rather than having a single function or role, stem cells have the potential to develop into different types of cells found in the body. Since they are unspecialized and don’t have specific roles, they are able to divide and renew themselves. This can be effective for repairing damaged tissues, as the cells divide and replace the damaged tissues. On the scalp, stem cells induce dormant, long-resting hair follicles to return to the growth phase of the hair lifecycle. This naturally returns hair growth to areas that were thinning.
How is the stem cell procedure done?
PolyCyte and CoreCyte are minimally manipulated human tissue allograft derived from the Wharton’s Jelly of the umbilical cord. They are processed to preserve cytokines, growth factors, proteins, mesenchymal stem cells and structural integrity of Wharton’s jelly for homologous use and are cryogenically frozen. At La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic, we use only stem cells from donated umbilical cord tissue. With the consent of the parents, tissue can be collected from the umbilical cord of a newborn baby shortly after the cord is detached and otherwise discarded. This has no effect on the mother or baby, and would simply be a part of the hospital’s biological waste, along with the placenta. Once the umbilical cord tissue is received, it is placed in a centrifuge and the mesenchymal stem cells, growth factors, and proteins are separated from the other components of the blood. This serum is ready to help you grow hair.
Before & After
For this treatment, we draw a sample of blood from the patient to create platelet-rich plasma. The blood is also placed in a centrifuge and the blood platelets, white blood cells, and plasma are separated from the red blood cells. What remains is platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in healing properties and growth factors. Professional athletes have used PRP for years to aid in the recovery after injury or surgery.
Now we have the patient’s PRP and we simply add the mesenchymal stem cell serum to it. This incredibly rich healing serum is then injected with a tiny needle every half-inch across the area of thinning hair.
Is stem cell therapy effective for hair loss?
Everyone has some degree of thinning with their hair as they age. In people with more aggressive thinning, a condition known as alopecia, more and more of the hair follicles become dormant and stop responding to the chemical signals to transition back to the growth phase and create a new hair after shedding the old hair. When injected, this combination of stem cells and PRP is effective in awakening these dormant cells and returning them to growth. Results will take from 6-8 months to show as the follicles begin to become active again.

Would I be a good candidate for stem cell treatment for hair loss?
This procedure is most effective for people in the early stages of hair loss, as the hair follicles have only recently become dormant. It is not effective for long-term, fully balding areas.
But if you are experiencing thinning hair, you’re an excellent candidate for this exciting new treatment. For men, the thinning can be more widespread. For women, thinning tends to occur on the part line of their hair.
Why Stem Cells?
Stem cells are best known for their abundant growth factors and their unique ability to differentiate into any cell in the body (in vitro). Once injected, mesenchymal stem cells have a “homing” capability that enables them to migrate and target specific tissues. The stem cells then go to work inhibiting inflammation and modulating the immune system. At the same time, the mononucleated cells produce growth factors that nourish damaged cells back to health and stimulate our own cells to regenerate themselves.
How are the Stem Cells Obtained and are They Safe?
Stem Cells are obtained from donated umbilical cords processed in US hospitals according to the rules and regulations of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB). Stem cells do NOT come from aborted fetuses. Stem cells come from the umbilical cords of live, healthy birthed babies. The stem cell product we use has been processed in a way that makes it “immune privileged,” meaning DNA testing and/or HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) matching is not necessary for this type of stem cells and treatment.
What Can I Expect During My Treatment?
The experience is extremely similar to the PRP treatment. A patient’s blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge and their platelet rich plasma is prepared to be injected into the desired areas. The only difference is the addition of the stem cells to the vial.
