From childhood through your 20s, your face is full, smooth. Your cheeks are firm and perky. Your skin glows radiantly because there are no deep facial depressions or hollows to cast shadows across the face. These are the hallmarks of youth.

As you age into your 30s, your face becomes more defined and angular as the fat beneath your skin diminishes: Middle age usually brings a triangular, heart-shaped face. As you progress into your 50s and beyond, fat continues to thin, which causes the triangle to invert. The lower face becomes fuller than the mid and upper face.

Fat Transfer – Before & After

These changes in the subcutaneous fat in your face are a big part of what makes us look older as the years go by. In addition to wrinkles and creases, volume loss is a target of anti-aging treatments. Injections of your own fat cells are one way to restore the full facial shape of youth.

What Is Fat Transfer?

This rejuvenating procedure restores dwindling facial volume using your own natural fat cells. The great thing about fat transfer is that it removes and utilizes fat cells from an area of excess, such as the:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • “Love handles”
  • Hips
  • Arms

Our physicians will extract the fat using a cannula attached to a syringe. This level of fat removal, while it shrinks an area of excess fat, is not the same as the large-scale fat reduction of tumescent liposuction. It is possible to also have a liposuction procedure performed. Our doctors will make sure you know how much fat reduction to expect if you have only the fat transfer performed.

Aging And Facial Volume Loss

As you age, fat beneath the skin on your face diminishes. One of the most innovative answers to this volume loss is the use of dermal fillers to restore smooth, full skin. Fat transfer works like a filler, but provides you the opportunity to have only natural material injected beneath your skin. Plus you get the added benefit of having the fat removed from elsewhere on your body. Fat grafting also tends to last much longer than dermal fillers, with the potential for permanent results.

These injections can be administered to various areas. The areas most significantly affected by diminishing fat are typically the following:

  • Cheeks
  • Around the eyes
  • Along the jaw
  • Wrinkles throughout the face

Rely on the experienced physicians at La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic to plan a highly individualized injection treatment that will provide you with outstanding results.

The Fat Transfer Procedure

There are three basic phases to this technique:

  • Harvesting the fat using a syringe and cannula
  • Purifying the fat by isolating the material needed and removing impurities
  • Placing the fat in the targeted facial areas using a series of micro injections

The entire procedure is completed in a single appointment at our clinic.

The physicians at our practice have the experience and skill to place the fat transplants in a way that creates ideal results. The tiny injections are laid beneath the skin in a grid pattern. Our physicians may massage the areas to further refine the shape of the fat.

Once the area has been given time to heal, the results will be long-lasting. Not only does this treatment restore a perky, full facial shape, it has the effect of increasing the light and radiance of your face, just as your face did naturally in your 20s and in your childhood. And all of this is accomplished with natural cells alone, which is an important aspect to many of our guests.
