As we age, we lose volume in our face and develop fine lines and wrinkles due to a slowdown in our skin’s production of elastin and collagen. These changes can make us look old and tired, even if we still feel youthful and spry. Luckily, there are many non-invasive cosmetic treatments available to help us look naturally younger. One such treatment is Restylane dermal fillers.
We offer five different types of Restylane here at La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic: the original formula, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne. Which version is appropriate for you will depend on your individual concerns.
If you would like to learn more about Restylane and how it could benefit you, don’t hesitate to call our office at 858-225-8380 to schedule your complimentary consultation. What Is Restylane?
Restylane is a very popular hyaluronic acid based dermal filler that provides instant and long lasting results. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, and as such, Restylane requires no testing for allergic reactions before injection.
Restylane works by restoring lost volume and filling in lines and wrinkles. It is virtually painless, although if you are concerned about potential pain or discomfort, we can apply a topical numbing cream beforehand. Most patients tolerate Restylane very well, and the procedure itself takes only around 10 to 15 minutes, potentially longer if you are having multiple areas treated.
What Concerns Can Restylane Treat?
Restylane is ideal for adding volume and smoothing wrinkles in the face. It could be a great option if you are suffering from:
- Volume loss in the cheeks or temples
- Thin lips
- Vertical lip lines (also known as “smoker’s lines” or “lipstick lines”)
- Dark under eye circles
- Marionette lines
- Drooping earlobes
In addition, Restylane can be used for non-surgical chin augmentation and nose reshaping. If you would like just a bit more volume to your chin but don’t want to have surgery for chin implants, or if you want to subtly reshape your nose (but not make it smaller), ask about Restylane.
Types Of Restylane Cosmetic Injections
Restylane Silk is a newer version of Restylane that is softer and more fluid, making it ideal for smoothing fine lines and adding very subtle volume to the lips. Restylane Silk is a great choice for treating vertical lip lines, which have a history of being one of the hardest areas to treat.
Since Restylane Silk is so smooth and soft, it is able to be injected very superficially, allowing lines to be smoothed without causing ridges or bumps. We have had great success smoothing lip lines and adding a touch of natural-looking volume to lips.
Restylane Lyft, on the other hand, is much firmer and meant to be injected deeply. It can lift and volumize cheeks that have begun to sag, and is wonderful for treating deeper lines and wrinkles in the midface. Lyft could be the right choice if you want to:
- Enhance your cheekbones
- Reduce your marionette lines or nasolabial folds
- Fill in temples that have lost their volume and begun to take on a “peanut” shape
- Augment your chin
Restylane Lyft is also the first and only HA injectable FDA-approved to help reverse the signs of volume loss in aging hands. Over time, volume in hands deteriorates, making them appear aged. Restylane Lyft is specifically designed to add volume to the backs of the hands which can result in a more youthful-looking appearance.
Restylane® Refyne is designed with XpresHAn Technology™ to help soften laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). This can help you restore a more natural look to your face while maintaining your facial expressions. So, you always look like you. Talk to your specialist and see for yourself why it’s worth it.
Restylane® Refyne is a specifically formulated hyaluronic acid dermal filler made with XpresHAn Technology™ that helps correct these lines for a more natural look to your face.3† The unique cross-linking of the gel in Restylane Refyne is also designed to help support your natural expression—for real-life results that help maintain natural movement when you’re smiling, frowning and even puckering up.
Restylane® Defyne crafted with XpresHAn Technology™ helps smooth out deep laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). Using innovative cross-linking technology, Restylane Defyne is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is able to help restore a more youthful, natural-looking appearance, while helping you maintain your natural expressions.
As we age, our skin loses elasticity and the lines that run from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds) and the lines that run from the corner of your mouth toward the chin (marionette lines) become more pronounced. Restylane Defyne is crafted with XpresHAn Technology™ to correct these deepened lines.3† The unique cross-linking of the gel in Restylane® Defyne is also designed to help support your facial expressions—for natural-looking results that help maintain your natural movement.
Candidates For Restylane Injections
Good candidates for Restylane are those who want to improve their appearance in a very subtle and natural way. It’s a good option for both older women wanting to restore volume and smooth lines and younger women wanting to enhance their lips or cheekbones.
In recent years, even men have begun to take advantage of Restylane. Most men use it to reduce deep wrinkles or to augment their jaw for a more masculine shape. Chin augmentation is also popular among men who feel they have a “weak” chin.
How Long Do The Results Of Restylane Last?
Restylane can last anywhere from 6 months to a year or longer, depending on the type of Restylane used and the area it was injected. Your own metabolism plays a role as well. If you are very active with a high metabolism, Restylane may not last as long.
You can touch up Restylane at any time for longer lasting results. There’s no need to wait until it’s all gone before having another treatment.
Can Restylane Be Used With Other Cosmetic Treatments?
Yes, Restylane is often used together with other treatments such as laser resurfacing or Botox® for more comprehensive results. In addition, different types of Restylane can be injected during the same treatment session in order to address different concerns at the same time.
Performing multiple non-invasive cosmetic treatments in the same session is known as a “liquid facelift,” and can provide more thorough and dramatic results than simply treating one concern at a time.
Side Effects Of Restylane
Restylane is FDA approved with a very high safety profile. As long as you visit an experienced injector, there are no serious side effects to be concerned about. However, as with all injectable treatments, there is a risk of bruising and swelling.
Generally, bruising and swelling last only a few days and are minor enough to be covered effectively with makeup. Swelling from lip injections may last for up to two weeks before you see your final result. If you are concerned about bruising, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk:
- Avoid blood thinning vitamins or medications such as aspirin or fish oil for two weeks beforehand
- Apply arnica if you see a bruise beginning to form
- Visit an experienced injector with good technique
