Reduce the Appearance of Acne Scars with Fraxel

Acne is a rite of passage for many young people, but like most rites of passage, the experience is unpleasant and tends to leave scars behind. Long after the trauma of acne breakouts have faded, the acne scars remain. The good news is that cosmetic lasers have come a long way in recent years. They can safely and effectively minimize or even completely remove in some cases scars caused by acne, trauma, or surgery. Their incredible precision allows the removal of only damaged tissue, leaving surrounding tissue intact. This precision means that your downtime and side effects will be minimal. We invite you to learn more about how the Fraxel laser can be used to address your scarring.

What are Fractional Lasers?

Fractional lasers come in two types: ablative and non-ablative. Non-ablative lasers like the Fraxel are very effective, but more gentle than other lasers. Generally, lasers like the Fraxel are more suited for mild to moderate acne scars. Fractional CO2 lasers are available, but generally require greater downtime.

Fraxel is effective in the treatment of problems like sun damage, wrinkles, poor skin texture, precancerous lesions, and acne scars. Most acne scar patients will benefit from multiple treatments with Fraxel. The benefits occur with very little discomfort experienced and low risk.

How Does Fraxel Work?

The Fraxel laser works on acne scars by creating very small microthermal zones or dots that penetrate deep within the skin. Your skin repairs this “damage” by pushing out old, acne-scarred skin and replacing the treated area with fresh skin. Every Fraxel treatment triggers your own body’s natural healing cascade. This speeds up the production of new collagen, which gradually renews your skin and minimizes your acne scars.

Patients often first notice results within one week of their Fraxel treatment. Of course, the results depend on the severity of your acne scars, as well as other factors. If you are having multiple Fraxel treatments, it may take months to see your complete results. Collagen will normally continue to form for multiple months after your final treatment.
