What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a form of skin cancer that affects the thin, flat cells that make up the lining of the epidermis, or outermost layer of skin. Although not often deadly, Squamous Cell Carcinoma can be dangerous if left untreated. Thankfully, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and other skin cancers can be cured completely if caught and treated early. For this reason, we encourage all of our patients to come in for regular skin cancer screenings and full-body skin exams each year.

What Causes Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous Cell Carcinoma, like other forms of skin cancer, is most commonly caused by overexposure to UV light. Harmful UV light is the type of light that is given off by the sun’s harmful rays. Patients who have a family history of skin cancer, have fair skin and burn easily are at a higher risk of developing Squamous Cell Carcinoma throughout their lifetime. Our dermatologist and our team of dermatologic professionals often recommend patients wear SPF and other sun protection to prevent the development of skin cancer.
