What is Actinic Keratosis?

Actinic Keratosis is a pre-cancerous skin condition that’s characterized by scaly, red legions along the skin. Because it is caused by overexposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays over a period of years, Actinic Keratosis does have the potential to turn into cancer if it is left untreated. For this reason, we ask all of our patients to keep an eye on their lesions to ensure they do not spread or change in color. While Actinic Keratosis typically affects men and women later in life, it’s important to be aware that it can affect anyone with excess exposure to the sun.

What Causes Actinic Keratosis?

The main cause of Actinic Keratosis is overexposure and damage caused by UV light. Patients who are fair-skinned, have light features, use tanning beds, live in sunny environments, and/or do not use SPF while outside for long periods are at a higher risk of developing Actinic Keratosis.

How Do I Know if I Have Actinic Keratosis?

Actinic Keratosis is most commonly characterized by the appearance of scaly, red patches of skin along the scalp, hands, arms, face, ears, back, and shoulders. While this condition will look slightly different for everyone, some important features to note include:

Raised, scaly patches
Redness
Sandpaper texture
