What Is Botox?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein that has been used therapeutically for over 2 decades to treat a variety of medical conditions. Since 2002 it has been FDA-approved for cosmetic treatments. The lines that appear between your brows result from muscle movement over time. As we age the skin becomes less elastic, repeated frowning can result in moderate to severe lines between the brows. Many patients elect to use BOTOX® as a wrinkle-preventive.

Dr. Mani Is A BOTOX® Platinum Plus Provider

BOTOX® Cosmetic works very differently than wrinkle fillers. BOTOX® blocks the body’s chemicals that cause wrinkle-causing facial muscle contraction. By preventing the contraction, you also prevent the wrinkle that comes from it. This works on many facial muscle activities, including:

  • Frown lines
  • Crows’ feet
  • Worry lines
  • Unbalanced brows
  • Lines or wrinkles under the eyes
  • Vertical lip lines (in conjunction with fillers)
  • “Bunny” lines on the nose
  • Downturned mouth corners
  • Heavy jaw (enlarged masseter muscles)
  • Low or heavy eyebrows (brow lift)
  • Chin crunch (unconscious contraction of chin muscles)
  • Neck bands (platysma)
  • Eyelid twitching

When Can I Expect To See Results?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the simplest procedures with one of the most dramatic responses. You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of the treated areas may continue to improve over time as the wrinkle relaxes and smoothes.

Is Botox Combined With Other Fillers?

Dr. Mani may recommend BOTOX® injections prior to filler injections in certain areas of frequent muscle movement as this prevents “creasing” of the filler product. Combined use often prolongs the effects of both BOTOX® and your chosen filler as they work synergistically to fill the wrinkles and relax the muscles themselves.

BOTOX® is very often used to affect a “Chemical Brow Lift” and can be accomplished with a few extra injection locations. By preventing the action of the muscles that push the brow down, the muscles that lift the brow up have more ability to raise the brow – in essence providing a temporary nonsurgical brow lift or brow balancing if one brow is lower than the other.

Also BOTOX® is an ideal treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis or severe sweating of underarms, hands, palms and soles of the feet. BOTOX® has been termed “the best antiperspirant on the planet.”

Actual Patient Review:

“My husband has super strong frown muscles. Many times he’s had people mistakenly worried that he was angry with them – even me! I gave him BOTOX® for his birthday. It’s been a gift we’ve all enjoyed, and even his co-workers remark on his new great mood.” Tish, La Jolla

How Soon Will I See Results?

You should expect to see immediate results within a few days, but normally the improvement will appear over the first week. If you are planning to have any laser treatments to your face area, inform the medical staff. The laser treatments may often be administered on the same day prior to receiving BOTOX®.

Dr. Mani or one of our medical team Physician Assistants will assess your facial activity and make appropriate recommendations regarding your specific needs. The procedure takes minutes, and no anesthesia is required. The discomfort is minimal and can be compared to a bug bite. You may resume normal activities and reapply make-up as needed. The most common side effects may include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, nausea or temporary eyelid droop.

What are the Risks of Botox Injections?

Botox is a neurotoxin, so anytime it is injected it stops the muscle it is injected into from contracting (working). If it is injected into the incorrect areas in the upper face, this may cause droopy eyebrows or eyelids. If too many units of botox are injected, the patient may experience a sensation of heaviness, and not being able to make facial expressions such as frowning or raising ones eyebrows.

Other side effects that may occur include: bruising that can last for days or weeks, temporary swelling, redness, rash, itching, discoloration, infection, tenderness and discomfort at the injection site, headache lasting up to a few days, flu-like symptoms, or an uneven appearance of the face with some muscles more affected by the Botox than others. In most cases, this asymmetric appearance can be corrected by a “touch up” Botox injection. However, in some extremely rare cases, this temporary uneven look may persist for several weeks or months.

Botox® & Dysport® FAQs

What is the Difference Between Botox® and Dysport®?

Botox® and Dysport® are both injectable treatments with the main ingredient botulinum toxin. They also treat the same areas of the face; the forehead and between the eyes. The main difference is the onset time. Dysport® often produces results within two days, affecting wider areas since it is injected deeper into the skin. Botox® produces results in three to five days, affecting localized regions.

Does Botox® Last Longer than Dysport®?

Both Botox® and Dysport® offer similar results in terms of longevity. Both treatments effectively reduce facial wrinkles for a period of four to six months.

Can You Mix Dysport® and Botox®?

Yes, you can mix Dysport® and Botox® together as the formulas are quite similar. However, depending on your cosmetic goals, this may not be necessary. Your doctor can help you determine the optimal treatment plan.

Which is Safer, Botox® or Dysport®?

Both Botox® and Dysport® are completely safe when administered by a qualified and experienced professional. They also produce similar side effects, so there is little difference in the body’s response to these treatments.

Which Works Better, Botox® or Dysport®?

Both Botox® and Dysport® can be highly effective at reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles. However, Dysport® may affect a wider area with a single injection, which might make it the better option for patients looking to address larger areas of the face.

Crow’s feet, frown lines, and wrinkles across the forehead can be treated with Botox® injections. To learn more about Botox® for men and women in San Diego, Encinitas, La Mesa, El Cajon, and surrounding areas of California, contact La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic today to schedule a consultation.
