Upturning The Downward Mouth Corners (The Drooping DAO)

In La Jolla

By Nasrin Mani, M.D.

What can you do about the wrinkles that go from the corners of your mouth downward that make you look old and sad?

Why this happens:
The muscle that pulls down the mouth corners is called the depressor anguli oris (we just say DAO). Because the downward pull becomes stronger as we age, it tends to shift normally upturned corners into that down “sad” look. So when you’re relaxed, you get questions such as “Are you okay?” “Is something wrong?” – Reversing that downturn can make a BIG difference in how people perceive your mood – and your age, too!

2-step solution:
Botox can be injected in these muscles, restoring the upward tilt by stopping the depressor muscle from acting. Few units are required – generally only 2 to 3 per side.

To fill the wrinkle further into the chin area (marionette lines ) we suggest a hyaluronic gelsuch as Restylane or Juvederm.

Once the corners are lifted and lines are removed, a small amount of Juvederm or Restylane in the lip body adds a finishing touch for a very pretty perky mouth and smile. Then the comments shift to “Well, you sure look like you’re in a good mood!”
