While it has traditionally been considered a condition that primarily affects adolescents, acne is becoming increasingly common among adults, particularly women. In fact, one study found that approximately 14% of women between ages 26 and 44 develop acne.
The base of every hair on your face contains a sebaceous gland which secretes oil, called sebum, which cleans the hair shaft. When sex hormones such as testosterone become overactive, excess sebum gets produced. This excess sebum interacts with dead skin cells on your face, blocking the hair follicles and causing bacteria to develop at a rapid rate. This ultimately leads to an inflammation which we know as acne.
While these hormones are particularly active during adolescence, there are also reasons why they may experience a surge during adulthood. This most commonly occurs as a result of:
- In vitro fertilization
In addition, stress can potentially trigger a hormonal imbalance that may result in the development of acne. Modern women in their 30s and 40s typically experience higher levels of stress than women of previous generations due to the fact that they are often trying to balance high-powered careers with family life.
