Under eye hollows are a pressing problem for many people who recognize how the appearance of being tired has a negative impact on relationships and their own self esteem. Using permanent filler for this purpose means a patient may only need to have 1 or 2 sessions to reach a desirable result with lasting results.
Although Artefill is used “off label” under the eyes, it is the only FDA approved ‘permanent’ dermal filler. Dr. Mani, as a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, has unique expertise in treating the sensitive and vulnerable areas around they eyes. With expert training, she has been selected by Suneva Medical, makers of Artefill, to run a study on the use of Artefill around the eyes. Artefill’s permanency requires precision skill in placement to assure patients get the results they want that look and feel completely natural.

How Is Artefill Permanent?
Artefill contains both a short term collagen “carrier” which degrades in 2 to 3 months and a permanent component. The permanent component is PMMA, essentially the same structure of what is used for contact lenses. This PMMA (polymethlymethacrylate) is formed in microscopic spheres which the body does not degrade and stays in the tissues.
Ten-year studies show the PMMA still resident in the skin integrated with the body’s own collagen structures. The PMMA presence spurs the body to maintain a higher level of collagen fibers so the correction “stays” – an actually improves over the first 6 months.
Will I Always Look This Good?
As we age, we naturally lose collagen, the main factor causing wrinkles and slack skin. With time, your natural loss of collagen may mean you need a small touchup, but for the most part, you can count on 5 or more years before you notice the changes. In any case, the original injection PMMA component does not go away.
Can I Change My Mind and Have the Artefill Removed?
No. Once injected, Artefill cannot be removed or dissolved as is possible with hyaluronic fillers. If you are uncertain if you would like the effects, we recommend that you first try Restylane.
Are There Side Effects After the Injection?
As with all injections, some bruising or temporary swelling may occur. We advise patients to refrain from anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen (unless physician-prescribed), Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort and Fish Oils for two weeks prior to treatment as these medications and supplements can contribute to undesirable bruising.
If you are taking blood thinners, you MUST discuss your desire for cosmetic injections with your primary physician first. In some cases you will be advised to avoid any cosmetic treatment involving injections or ablative laser due to the potential for under-skin bleeding. In some other instances, your physician may allow you to refrain from blood thinners for a temporary period to allow for injections.
