PRP for Hair Thinning in San Diego, CA

How is PRP used for hair restoration?

The goal is to get those resting follicles to kick into gear and being producing hair. The vehicle to do that is PRP. It is injected in dozens of injections across the scalp in the area where the hair is thinning. Then the PRP is allowed to work its magic with its growth facilitators stimulating resting follicles to return to growth stage. With more follicles back growing hair again, shedding decreases dramatically, and areas of thinning hair begin to fill back in.

How is the PRP obtained?

The process begins by taking a small amount of blood, an amount similar to a blood test. We place the blood in a centrifuge to separate out the different components, dividing the red blood cells from the plasma (the clear fluid that makes blood liquid) and the platelets. By removing the red blood cells, the remaining plasma liquid has four times the normal number of platelets, hence the term “platelet-rich” plasma. This process only takes a few minutes.

How Does PRP Work?

PRP is prepared and mixed with an activation serum that sends specific messages to the skin’s cells. Anytime the skin is “wounded”, repair cells and active growth factors rush in to heal. The prepared PRP sends a strong “wound” message (even though there is no comparable wounding). The skin naturally turns up the cell repair mechanisms and the end result is healthier-looking skin with additional collagen strands.Watch video for procedure process.

PRP has been used for many years in the sports field to accelerate the healing of joint damage. In the last few years platelet rich plasma was dubbed “liquid gold” because of its ability to enhance the results of skin resurfacing treatments; both aggressive laser levels and lighter micro needling. PRP is also injected alongside fillers to boost the body’s production of collagen.

How is the PRP injected into the scalp and is it painful?

Now that we have the PRP, your La Jolla Cosmetic Laser doctor injects it back into the scalp using a special syringe with three needles. The PRP is injected at approximately every half inch across the area of thinning hair. The injections are not at any depth, so they aren’t painful. Still, topical numbing agent is applied prior to the PRP session to ensure your comfort.

Will PRP Grow Hair In Bald Areas?

When hair follicles are no longer viable and no longer produce hair, PRP cannot regrow hair. The treatment goal is to help stop the process of hair thinning (minaatuization). The increased blood supply and natural responses to the introduction of the PRP into the scalp helps revive thinning hair. The earlier you begin treatment when you notice thinning, the better long term potential for success.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Hair goes through stages. By treating multiple times, you are able to treat the majority of hair when it is in the receptive phase to treatment. The number of treatments will be based on how well you respond.
