Fraxel Laser Treatment Types
When working on scar tissue, Dr. Nasrin Mani uses the Fraxel re:store lasers to deliver heat deep in the skin. This heat “injury” prompts the body to produce increased amounts of collagen, a natural protein, which pushes up the floor of the scar and makes the target area more level with the surrounding skin. Surgeons used to inject collagen under scars to produce the same result, but the results were short-lived. Fraxel harnesses the power of lasers to help the body do its own filling of depressed scars. Since the collagen is your own, there is no risk of infection, though we recommend a follow-up to make sure.
Fraxel Dual, a laser designed specifically to reduce pigmentation, is used quite differently to counteract sun or age spots and other pigment discolorations. Instead of prompting the body to produce collagen, the lasers target the body’s melanin, which is the natural chemical that causes dark pigmentation. Fraxel Dual laser treatment allows Dr. Mani to directly and specifically target the undesired pigment. The laser breaks up the pigments and prompts the body to rapidly shed the layers of skin that contain those pigments..
