Whether you start to see signs of facial aging in your 30s, 40s, or beyond, many people want to keep their youthful facial appearance for as long as possible. Cosmetic plastic surgery has grown in popularity, opening the door to numerous procedures and treatments that turn back the clock on aging. Sculptra and dermal fillers are frequently recommended as an excellent way to achieve restorative, youthful contours, reduce wrinkles, and provide a range of other benefits. In this blog, we’ll explore the differences among the treatments to give you a better idea of which one meets your needs and goals.
How Dermal Fillers Make Their Mark
As we age, our skin naturally sags and loses volume and elasticity, resulting in wrinkles, a hollowed appearance, and uneven skin. Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectables, typically made from hyaluronic acid (HA), designed to provide immediate volume beneath the skin’s surface at strategic, calculated points. They smooth wrinkles and folds in the cheeks, chin, and even the hands, restoring volume for a livelier, brighter appearance. They can also be used to regain fullness in the lips if they have become thin and undefined. Dermal fillers create immediate results, allowing you to be photo-ready for a shoot, wedding, or other special event.
Though the results of Dermal fillers are immediate, they last between 6 and 18 months. Patients typically attend several injection sessions to maintain the results, which adapt and evolve with their natural movement. If you don’t like the way your dermal filler looks, you can have it dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. After receiving dermal filler, the injection site will be a little swollen and bruised, but this subsides within 3 to 4 days.
How Sculptra Can Benefit You Over Time
Sculptra is a liquid injectable injected into deeper tissues of the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. As a result, your youthful contours, firmer, smoother skin, and facial volume are gradually restored as collagen production increases. Sculptra is still a dermal filler, but it’s made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which promotes collagen production over time, leading to subtle, gradual results that last several years.
Sculptra is primarily touted for its subtle, long-lasting results, which typically last around 2-3 years. Because of this, patients are able to avoid going to tons of appointments and having to deal with the results of over-injection, such as an unnatural, puffy, or “overdone” appearance. Sculptra is a more regenerative, natural approach that uses strategic placement to stimulate the body’s own collagen, leading to gradual, subtle, and longer-lasting results rather than just filling lines. You will still need to attend a handful of Sculptra injection sessions, but not nearly as many as other dermal fillers.
Your Preference is Our Priority
While some people are looking for a simple, short-term solution to give their face or hands a little boost in fullness, tone, and definition, others prefer subtle, longer-lasting results that are not immediately noticeable. It’s important to be honest with yourself as you consider your goals and what you want from this type of treatment. If you’re looking for a short-term boost in a targeted area or to dip your toe into injectables, dermal fillers are probably best. If you are looking for subtle, natural-looking results that slowly appear over time, Sculptra would be the best way forward.
