Exfoliation Bewares

In La Jolla

By Nasrin Mani, M.D.

Exfoliation can be a big boost to skin clarity — if it’s not overdone.
Cautionary advice for specific skin types:

Sensitive skin. Very reactive skin can easily be irritated or even scarred when the wrong methods or products are used. Plus, too much loss of the skin’s protective barrier can lead to inflammation and increased sensitivity. Use gentle products and skip any product with high-level abrasives like ground shells.

Pigmented skin. People with darker toned skin need to be careful as their skin is more susceptible to post-inflammatory-hyperpigmentation. NEVER use a do-it-yourself exfoliator to the point of redness.

Acne-prone skin. Acne can actually be aggravated by excessive and harsh exfoliation. Gentle exfoliation can help prevent breakouts, but too much and you’ll traumatize skin that is already out of balance. Use products with fine microbeads. These are usually skin-friendly and won’t cut the skin – which can cause spread of bacteria.

No matter your skin type, it’s important to follow with a moisturizer or protective hydrating serum.

A professional exfoliation and the correct product choices for your skin type and condition lead to healthier skin and a more attractive complexion. Call us for a complimentary skin assessment with our esthetician.
