Most of us realize our skin will change as we get older. This happens for several reasons, including genetics, sun exposure, and even repetitive facial movements. The natural decline of collagen and elastin also plays a prominent role in the development of lines and wrinkles. Without sufficient collagen, the skin also becomes rough and discolored. To correct these concerns, many people consider laser skin resurfacing.
We are masters of tissue rejuvenation using laser devices. At La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic, we use our broad base of knowledge to determine which laser device will achieve the best results in any given situation. In general, laser skin resurfacing works by removing a precise layer of cells using energy. Not only does the absorption of laser energy achieve effects like tightening strands of fraying collagen, but it also stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin to help the skin age better. But we can’t leave this up to lasers alone. To maximize the effects of laser skin resurfacing, our clients may want to:
- Hone their sunscreen habit. Sunscreen is a critical aspect of anti-aging. A broad-spectrum product with an SPF of 30 is typically sufficient. This SPF blocks approximately 95% of UV rays. The important matter is that sunscreen is applied daily. If you’re out in the beautiful San Diego sunshine, you’ll need to reapply about every 2 hours, too.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. It is water that makes the skin plump. When we get dehydrated, the skin can literally look scaly. We don’t want that. In addition to facilitating plumpness, water is also necessary to help flush toxins and waste products, a function that supports skin health.
- Nourish from the inside. A diet that is rich in vitamins and antioxidants is good for the whole body, especially the skin. Antioxidants are found in leafy greens and fresh fruits. They inhibit the activity of free radicals, chemicals in the body known to cause premature aging.
- Nourish from the outside. Laser treatments are excellent options for reviving dull and damaged skin. By removing a layer of skin cells, laser treatment sets the stage for future nourishment via medical-grade skincare products. For your best skin, it isn’t enough to splash water on your face or wash your face in the shower. Your facial skin needs specific ingredients like mild acids and peptides to thrive.
