What Is Ultherapy Lift?
Ultherapy is a gentle, non-invasive ultrasound treatment that pushes back against the effects of decreasing collagen production and sagging due to gravity and natural aging. Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared procedure that uses ultrasound to initiate new collagen and elastin production in the dermis layer of the skin. This lifts, tightens, and tones the skin on the face, neck, and décolletage. We’re so experienced with Ultherapy at La Jolla Laser Clinic that we’ve been designated an Ultherapy Premiere+ Practice.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?
When you think of what you’re trying to achieve with a surgical facelift, that’s how to think of Ultherapy. Of course, this non-invasive procedure can’t deliver the same level of rejuvenation as surgery, but Ultherapy achieves those kinds of tightening and lifting effects. Ultherapy is a good procedure if you have mild to moderate skin laxity across your eyebrows, neck, under your chin, or if you have lines or wrinkles on your décolletage.
Ultherapy won’t replace a facelift, but it is a good alternative for patients who either don’t want to have surgery or are looking for ways to extend a prior facelift, neck lift, or brow lift.
How is Ultherapy done?
Our Ultherapy treatments at La Jolla Laser only take about an hour. About 45 minutes prior to your session we recommend our Ultherapy patients take 800 mg of ibuprofen to alleviate any discomfort.
In your treatment, the Ultherapy handpiece is passed lightly over your skin. As it is moved, the handpiece delivers its focused ultrasound energy down into the dermis, the second layer of the skin beneath the outer epidermis. When the ultrasound energy reaches the dermis it converts to heat. When the body senses heat in the dermis layer, it assumes a wound has occurred and it initiates a “wound-healing response.” This involves the production of new amounts of collagen and elastin sent to the treatment area to “heal” the perceived wound. Of course, there isn’t any actual wound, but the new collagen and elastin improve the tone and texture of the skin, lifting and firming the area.
The secret to Ultherapy’s remarkable results is its ultrasound energy. Unlike some tightening procedures that can damage the epidermis, Ultherapy’s ultrasound energy passes right through the epidermis into the dermis. This protects the outer skin surface and is more comfortable than other procedures. Plus, there isn’t any downtime. This separates Ultherapy from various laser procedures.
How Does Ultherapy “Lift”?
The ultrasound energy reaches all the way to the SMAS, the same levels as those affected in surgical face lifting. At this level Ultherapy places thousands of tiny energy deposits at in the skin – both at 4.5mm and then at 3.0 mm. These energy deposits create what is called TCPs – or thermal coagulation points.
These TCPs cause a two-fold reaction. One is immediate tightening and the 2nd is the start of a gradual, long term collagen production process that lifts and tightens both the deep SMAS layer and the dermal layer. The final results? Tighter, more lifted jawline and neck, more uplifted cheek area and what amounts to a gentle brow lift.
Is there recovery after an Ultherapy session?
There isn’t any recovery after these treatments at La Jolla Laser Clinic. After your session, your skin may appear flushed, but this will disappear within a few hours in most cases. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling, or tenderness on the treated areas, but this also resolves quickly. Immediately after your session, you can go right back to work, exercise, or your other normal activities.
How many Ultherapy sessions will I need?
This is up to you. At La Jolla Laser, many of our patients see great improvement in just a single Ultherapy session; others prefer a series of sessions. Some of our patients view these treatments as a way to balance the ledger, so to speak, with the ongoing decline of collagen and elastin that is a natural part of aging.
When will I see my results?
Some patients see an initial tightening, but most of your improvements will occur over the following 2-3 months, as your body builds new collagen and elastin.
How long will my results last?
Because Ultherapy triggers new collagen production, your results last for about one year. Then the natural decline of collagen comes back into play, so another Ultherapy session can be scheduled to maintain your results.
Does Ultherapy hurt?
You’ll have a warming, possibly prickly sensation as the ultrasound energy enters the skin, but patients don’t equate this with pain. As mentioned above, we recommend 800 mg of over-the-counter ibuprofen about 45 minutes before your session. That’s all you’ll need.
Are there side effects with Ultherapy?
Ultrasound energy has been used in medical diagnostics for decades. The human body tolerates ultrasound energy very well. Other than the mild skin flushing and possible slight swelling discussed above, there aren’t any side effects with these completely non-invasive treatments.
Ultherapy FAQs
How Much Does Ultherapy Cost?
How Long Does Ultherapy Last?
The results from Ultherapy last for about one year thanks to the new collagen that is stimulated through treatment. However, these results can be easily prolonged and maintained with additional treatments.
What Does Ultherapy do to Your Face?
Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to gently heat the skin in the face. This process triggers collagen production in the skin, which will gradually repair and rejuvenate the skin over time.
How Painful is Ultherapy?
The Ultherapy treatment may cause a warming or prickly sensation in the skin, but it is not necessarily described as painful. The treatment is generally well tolerated, and ibuprofen can be used to manage any post-treatment discomfort.
How Long Before You See Results from Ultherapy?
After the Ultherapy treatment, it takes approximately two to three months for the full results to become visible. This is because it takes time for collagen production to increase in the body, and later become implemented into the skin.
Increasing collagen levels in your skin with Ultherapy® treatments restores contours and softens wrinkles.
